Handmade Lampwork Beads by Suzanne

Lampworking is the process of making glass beads by winding molten glass around a metal mandrel, which has been coated in ceramic slip. The hot glass can then be shaped and decorated in a multitude of ways before being very slowly cooled. Examples of glass beads date from as early as 2300 BC and techniques have advanced, declined and been rediscovered many times throughout history, by different cultures such as the Mesopotamian's, Egyptians, Romans, Celts, Vikings, Franks and Venetian's.

I enjoy making glass beads as a hobby, creating both contemporary designs and recreations of historical styles. These medieval beads are for use within The Society for Creative Anachronism, a medieval re-creation society of which I am a member.

On these pages you will find a showcase of some of my favourite beads; beads sets and finished jewellery for sale; documentation for my SCA beads projects; and links to useful sites for lampworking information.
